When the nerves are damaged, they become unable to send signals normally between the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to the rest of the body. Any parts of the body connected to damaged nerves can experience numbness and pain.

PN can affect a single nerve (mononeuropathy) or multiple nerves (polyneuropathy). This condition can result from chemotherapy treatments, autoimmune disease, toxic chemical exposure, kidney failure, hereditary disorders and more.

Common peripheral neuropathy symptoms include burning or freezing sensations, sensitivity to touch, muscle weakness, cramping, twitching, sweating, difficulty walking or moving the extremities and the loss of balance or coordination.
